It is widely researched that physical activity during pregnancy has benefits for both the mother and baby. Low impact cardiovascular exercise and strength based exercise are encouraged and exercising during pregnancy is shown to improve psychological health and also has many physical benefits.
Pilates is low impact and therefore an excellent form of exercise during pregnancy and can help to improve sleep, mood, reduce back pain, help with weight management and reduce the risk of incontinence. It is also shown that Pilates can support with common pregnancy complaints such as reduced swelling, reduced constipation, improved circulation, support with adjusting to physical changes to the body as well as making it easier for women to resume exercise post birth.
Postnatal Pilates offers many benefits for new mothers aiding their physical and mental recovery after childbirth. This includes strengthening of the core muscles which are often weakened during pregnancy, recovery from diastasis recti, strengthening of the pelvic floor and restoring muscle tone and stability of the abdominal and lower back. This can significantly improve posture, reduce the risk of back pain and other related issues that a new mother frequently encounters as they adapt to the demands of caring for an infant.
Another significant benefit of Pilates is the impact on mental health. Controlled breathing and mindful movement can reduce stress and anxiety fostering a sense of calm and wellbeing. Moreover, participating in post natal classes can provide a sense of community and support. Sharing this experience with other new mothers can alleviate feelings of isolation and the social aspect can enhance motivation and commitment to regular exercise.
